Head In The Sand emerged during a tumultuous period in Thompson’s life, when he navigated a series of personal struggles, including the loss of his dog, the death of his mother, and a life-altering breakup. Over 10 dynamic and unforgettable tracks, the LP serves as a powerful reminder to release what holds you back in tough times. It’s about staying present through grief, finding moments of light to champion yourself, and continuing to move forward.
The music blends jazz-infused rock with biting, a countrified pace – a mix of tight grooves and laid-back introspection, with rollicking, jazz-inflected rock drawing influences from Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, and the Grateful Dead.
Jake Davis recorded and produced the album, with Thompson enlisting an impressive lineup of musicians, including bassists Alec O’Connell and Ryan Jennings, keyboardists Erin Rae and Jo Schornikow (Phosphorescent), drummer Ben Parks, synth player Michael Ruth, guitarist Jack Quiggins, and steel player Spencer Cullum.
“The players are so good that I just wanted to create something open-ended, with plenty of room for interpretation – giving these amazing musicians space to do what comes naturally,” says Thompson. “I’ve called in 3 billion favors from everybody, and it makes me feel humbled and grateful to be part of something so vibrant and special, surrounded by so many brilliant people.”
Sonically, Head In The Sand is a journey through a wide open desert, driving straight into the southwestern sunset – lyrically heavy and introspective, instrumentally enlightening.
