Oklahoma! is a production that, like Cleto, I admit I’ve never seen. However, I do recognize the nod to the 1943 musical from the cover art to the opening track on Kaitlin Butts’ newest album – Roadrunner! Beyond that, I will have to rely on the insights of others regarding its parallels & make a promise to myself that I will check that box on my next couch ridden rainy day.
“Every summer when I was a kid, my parents would take me to see a performance of ‘Oklahoma!’ at a local amphitheater, and I’ve felt such a strong connection to it my entire life. It’s a love story, but there’s also a murder and a little bit of an acid-trippy feel to it at times; it’s set in the same place where I come from. Once I got the idea for this album, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before, and it turned into something that completely encompasses who I am and what I love,” says Butts.
With 17 tracks, Roadrunner! offers a plethora of sonic jewels – from its title track about loving life on the road to a famous roadside Cactus Juice – so delicious that it just may save the world, and of course Butts’ already hit single Hunt You Down – a rollicking murder ballad about a cheating spouse.. Roadrunner! combines lyrical authenticity that’s dripping with wit & wry humor and a country sound so full of stories, it’s capable of one day becoming a musical itself. It’s a piece of work that fans in Butts’ home state of Oklahoma and beyond will find irresistible. Buckle up, roll down the windows, and hit that desert highway – just watch for those coyotes.
