Sweet Critters, the latest release by Caleb Caudle, is a wonderful juxtaposition.. delivered with lots of heavy subject matter, yet it makes you feel so good to listen – a collection of gospel, country soul, and folk.. a diary of sorts. Where he’s been and where he’d like to one day be. Each song on this album paints vivid, poignant narratives, introducing listeners to the characters that drift in and out of the stories, along with the hidden troubles they carry, tightly tucked away in their closets.
Like many of us, Caudle has faced his own personal struggles, and much of Sweet Critters delves into his anxieties and restless nights. “The Brim” stands out as a celestial example of this theme – it’s almost haunting yet strangely comforting – making you realize none of us are alone, reflecting the dual nature of confronting one’s fears while seeking solace.
The album features eleven original tracks, along with one cover: the opener, Keith Whitley’s “Great High Mountain,” which was first released by Larry Sparks. Caudle adds a cinematic tone to this new version and sets the vibe for the entire album. It could easily serve as the soundtrack for the return of Yellowstone, complementing the great music the series has already showcased. Someone get that Taylor Sheridan guy on the line..
