Vancouver-based country singer Bob Sumner has released his second album, Someplace To Rest Easy. At the risk of sounding clichéd, the album truly lives up to its name. Sumner’s voice, smooth and effortless, feels tailor-made for country music, adding depth and clarity to the stories he tells. Someplace To Rest Easy is a seamless blend of eras, sounds, and styles, weaving together a heartfelt tapestry that gives warmth and evokes the kind of bliss I find in rocking chairs, the sound of a running brook from my tent, and sunrises.
The album features subtle yet infectious guitar licks, riffs, and bass grooves. Strings are paired with tasteful synths, while dobro and steel guitar bring out the heart of country. These laid-back vibes create vivid stories, drawing listeners into a setting worth their attention.
“I’ve always been a lover of ballads and somber music. I’m just such a sap,” Sumner admits.
Sumner’s musical diversity is rooted in his upbringing. His grandfather, a jazz guitarist, juggled gigs with a job as a janitor, while his mother, raised in a religious community, played gospel and church music by ear on the piano. However, it was his brother Brian – his bandmate in the Sumner Brothers for over two decades – who had the greatest influence. “My brother was obsessed with pushing boundaries,” Sumner explains, noting their eclectic catalog became a masterclass in experimentation. Playing alongside his brother ultimately led Sumner to find his own artistic voice.
