The Santa Cruz-based ensemble, AJ Lee & Blue Summit are ready to take flight, soar the wide-open skies & land on the big stage. With their third release – City of Glass, years of growing and honing their craft together, the band has produced a true winner.
The group first met as teenagers, roaming and picking at bluegrass festivals, until they made the sound decision to make it official by forming AJ Lee & Blue Summit.
The band currently features AJ Lee (mandolin, lead vocals), Scott Gates (guitar, lead vocals), Jan Purat (fiddle), and Sullivan Tuttle (guitar), the younger brother of Molly Tuttle.
Produced by Lech Wierzynski of the California Honeydrops, City of Glass unfolds with a spacious and organic intimacy that makes you feel like you’re sitting on the riverbanks, listening to a spontaneous jam session.
Musically capable of launching into a pick-a-thon, particularly when guitarists Tuttle and Gates start trading licks, but they’re equally comfortable slowing things down to highlight their tender side and vocal prowess. The presence of two tremendous voices only enhances this ability—not to mention some incredible yodeling, which I’m admittedly a sucker for.
“We play together because we have fun playing together. If we had a mission statement, that’s what it would be,” says Scott Gates.
